It is speculated that the first use of the Persian carpets was as a floor covering of the tents of nomadic people who used the wool of their sheep and goats as their raw material.

Iran (previously known as Persia) exports 80% of its carpets to foreign countries, keeping a small percent for local consumption. This industry employs over a million weavers and several million related workers, and although it is now having to compete with commercial machine made carpets, there are still millions of discerning buyers around the world who recognize the beauty of the handmade item.

There are many different types of persian carpet design and they are named according to the region in which they were made. Generally the designs are intricate and symbolic and conoscenti are able to “read” the story woven into individual carpets. Nature forms the inspiration for the majority of designs – animals, birds and plants all woven into a story celebrating life and art.
